Our Proposed partnership is based around 'Celebrating Diversity Through Popular Culture and Sport' (CDT PCS). The partnership involves a cross section of both eastern and western European Union members, it has a strong link between two UK schools and will potentially involve 4,500 pupils from ages 3-18, mainly from rural disadvantaged backgrounds.
The partnership was born out of a contact seminar in Brasov, Romania and the successful relationship that has produced provides the stability and context for our proposal.
We plan to address the issue of diversity in Europe by enabling young people to communicate through the mediums of Popular Culture and Sport. The combination of partners reflects the very diversity we hope to celebrate as students develop their skills of analysis, empathy and of evaluation.
The project will have 3 main aspects, Music, Sport and Teenage Free Time. The project will culminate with a celebratory festival of Popular Culture and Sport in Romania, where the partnership originated, giving the project a more complete and purposeful nature.
The proposed project will have a lasting impact on the curriculum of all institutions, with a website and sports equipment being just two of the expected products, together with an increase in Physical Education and a heightened awareness of the increasingly diverse culture of Europe we now live in.
Our project is designed with a few very specific issues in mind. We want to address the issues that the rapid expansion of the European Union eastwards has presented us with since the turn of the century, mainly to address the level of diversity which now pervades all European societies.
The second major area to address is the health and fitness of our European Citizens. With the majority of gold medals going to the US and China at the last Olympics, together with the UK specifically being ranked the most obese country in Europe, we hope to tackle these issues through European cooperation.
Our concrete project objectives will therefore be as follows:
1) To celebrate diversity in European Union in the twenty first century.
2)To encourage dialogue between the members of the European Union in the partnership.
3) To increase interest in learning foreign languages.
4)To Encourage cross-curricular work in partner schools.
5)To Increase participation in Sport, both in school and out of school time.
6)To be able to identify and compare the main aspects of popular culture in the partner countries.
In order to achieve our objectives, we plan to take the following approach:
1) We plan to explore the similarities and differences in popular culture through music.
2) We plan to share and take part in various sporting activities specific to different countries in the partnership.
3) We plan to explore what teenagers do with their free / leisure time in different European countries.
4) We plan to hold a festival of sport and popular culture in Romania at the end of our two year partnership.
